Martha C. Leland to Charles M. Leland, 15 August 1862
Aug 15th 1862
My dear husband
I received two letters from you and one from Elwin last evening. I felt so glad to hear from Elwin although I had not read anything in the papers which led me to suppose that he was engaged in the late battle. I have had the Journal every day, and read that Hartsuff brigade arrived late Saturday night after the fight was over. The day you left home I received a telegram of Elmers death poor boy he died of Typhoid fever it was a horrible blow to Lander and Mary and I do most truly sympathise with them Mary has a slow fever but they / think that she will soon be about again. Aunt Joann is dead she died of Typhoid fever was sick but one week. I attended her funeral Wednesday. Joel and Esther came down from Winchendon brought Frank and Florence with them. Frank is here visiting Henry as Mary is not able to have to have companey at present. I had made arrangements engaged a horse and carriage and Frank was going to carry me up to Winchendon Saturday morning and if Mary had been as well I should have kept on to Saratoga and Joel and Esther would have taken the carriage back. But as you have seen fit to arrange a different programme I have writen to them / that I shall come up there with Frank next Tuesday morning, and shall expect you in the 11 Oclock train, and have you stop over one train, and proceed on our journey in the afternoon at four Oclock. Asher came over to Aunts funeral and said that he had got a new recruit in the shape of a boy a ten one half pounder, two days old. Lizzie is doing well. I think of sending Henry over there with Willard next week. You made a great mistake in haveing Henry direct his letters to the store as I had to pay 1.75 more than I should have done if I had got his letter. Ada and Henry are very well and happy. be sure and come up at the time apointed and not after the arrangements again; with much love ever yours Mother
Ps I forgot to mention that Frank had been sick but is about well now he and Henry Eddy are having gay times they have gone a fishing this forenoon.
Willard seems to be doing a very good business he sas sent more money
