George W Taylor was born on May 17, 1832, in Danvers, Massachusetts, to Eben M. Taylor and Mary A. Twiss. His father was a shoemaker who owned $500 of real estate in 1850. He married Martha Taylor on October 27, 1855, and they had at least six children: Mary, born around 1857; Annie, born around 1859; Florence, born around 1861; Daniel, born around 1867; Grace, born around 1873; and Martha, born around 1876. The family lived in South Danvers, and Taylor worked as a shoemaker. By 1860, he owned $1,500 of real estate and $150 of personal property.
He enlisted in the Union army on November 27, 1861, and mustered in as a 2nd lieutenant in the 4th Independent Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery later that day. He received a promotion to 1st lieutenant in August 1862. The regiment took part in the Siege of Port Hudson, the Mobile Campaign, and the Battles of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakeley. He mustered out in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 11, 1865.
Taylor settled in Peabody, Massachusetts, after the war, and he worked as a farmer. By 1870, he owned $4,000 of real estate and $200 of personal property. He died in Peabody of “rheumatic fever” on December 29, 1900.
