Joseph Madison Curtis
Joseph Madison Curtis was born on February 26, 1844, in Leeds, Maine, to George Washington Curtis and Nancy Rowe. His father was a farmer who owned $800 of real estate and $250 of personal property. According to the 1860 census, his father was unable to hear or speak. Curtis grew up in Leeds and attended school there. He married Sarah Jane Hodson in Leeds on December 4, 1863. He enlisted in the Union army on December 15, 1863, and mustered in as a private in Company A of the 30th Maine Infantry later that day. He died on April 9, 1864, in the Battle of Pleasant Hill, reportedly “Killed by gun shot while engaging the enemy.”
