U.S. hospital Newark
Oct 19th 1862
Dear parents,
I wrote to you a few days since and told you that I thought I should be at home in the course of two weeks well I did think so then but it is not likely that I shall quite as soon as that. the Dr told me last night that it would take about two weeks to get my furlough signed and get it back here it will have to go to N.Y. / and be signed by the Surgeon Gen. and there is such a press of business on hand that it takes a long time to get one through but I shall get home sometime I guess. so dont be very much disappointed if I dont get home quite as soon as you thought I would. I am not gaining much here and it is not likely that I can but I think I hold my own. write as soon as you get this and let me know how / you do. if I get home in three weeks from to day it will be as soon as I expect and when I do come I want you to be well and hearty dont tell anybody that I am coming home but tell them that I am still alive and am determined to live a while longer. if I can get out where I can do as I please I hope to get as well as I used to be. You will probably get an order or check from the / state treasurer for my pay the last of this month I dont know wheather it will be 10. or 20. dollars but I think you will get an order at any rate. it will be good at any bank in the state so you will have some money then, but I must close and so good bye.
William
I have just received your letter with the 500 dollars and also one from Mary Collins and one from Robert Orel was very glad to get them.
Wm.
