William Emerson Way was born on November 24, 1838, in Lempster, New Hampshire, to John and Polly Way. His father was a farmer who owned $700 of real estate and $690 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Lempster, and by 1860, he was working as a farmer.
He enlisted in the Union army on August 13, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company G of the 9th New Hampshire Infantry the following day. He was promoted to corporal soon afterward. He was wounded in the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, and he mustered out on October 30, 1862.
He returned home to Lempster, and he eventually recovered his health. He married Roana C. Adams on June 25, 1864, and they had at least two children: Kate, born around 1866; and Will, born around 1879. He worked as a merchant, and by 1870, he owned $800 of real estate and $3,000 of personal property.
They moved to Charlestown, New Hampshire, in the late 1800s, and Way worked as a travelling salesman there. His wife died in 1909, and he passed away in Charlestown of “cerebral apoplexy” on April 29, 1914.
