Camp Hascall
July 11th 1861
Dear parents
I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am getting in in good health and hope these few lines may find you all well. the regiment was paraded this morning at 4 oclock and two privates were drumed out of company A to the rouges march at the point of the bayonet. their names were michiel Conner and patrick Oleary. patrick is the same man uncle George seen in the guard house they looked doleful, sure / Our boys still keep taking in the rebels every night they took a man that lived within fifty yards from the camp. he was a commissioned captain in the rebel army. we got news this morning that the ninth Indiana reg are all cut to pieces. I like this country better than any place I was ever at it is the prettiest place in the world although I would like spend a few days in old Ripley. Company A has a tolerable bad time as two were drumed out this morning and one shot his arm off at the elbow last night our ifficers says that the state of / Indiana will pay us for the first 28 days of our time the 27th of this month. the most of the boys are taking up their wages in Sutler tickets. the sutler sells no whiskey and I come across a fellow with 70 cents worth of tickets and he wanted some to get out and get drunk on so I give him 25 cts for them which will keep me in paper and ink and envelopes some time. you need not be fritinginged for we are a going to skin the rebels right out in about 2 weeks you may look for some thing the bloody 17teens did or did not do.
Yours truly
George. W. Young
