Emily A. Williams (maiden name: Herring) was born on November 16, 1829, in Dedham, Massachusetts, to Nathaniel Herring and Hannah Kingsbury. Her father died sometime before 1850. She married Henry W. Williams, a shoemaker, around 1852, and they had at least three children together: Frank, born around 1854; Edwin, born around 1856; and Emma, born around 1858. The family lived in Lynn, Massachusetts, and by 1860, they owned $100 of personal property. Her husband enlisted in the Union army in 1861 and died during the winter of 1861-1862. Emily spent the rest of her life in Peabody, Massachusetts, raising her children on her own. Her son Frank lived with her until 1910, working as a farm laborer to help support the family. She died in Peabody on June 20, 1910, of “blood poisoning from ulcers on [her] legs.”
