Dear Father & Mother
I take my pen in hand to address you a few lines. I am very well at present hoping this will find you all in good health
we have got 120 head of cattle and 200 sheep and plenty of pilot bread we are liveing very well now. we have had tolerable plenty to eat all the time when any body is able to eat it Since we have been in maryland I have been as well as ever I was in my life although while I was sick i seen a tolerable hard time about the crackers but now i can eat any thing. I bet I will come home fat as ever I was / we are diging ditches and building breastworks and I think we will stay here some time the 18th Ohio reg is encamped close to our camp. the fortifications we are building commands two roads and a bridge over the potomac and they say the rebels are obliged to pass this so we are sure to get a fight and that is just what we want the boys are spoiling for a fight I dont know where any of the Ind regs is. you know a great deal more about the war than I do I was on guard last night and I feel tolerable sleepy. I have not seen but about 2 citizens for two and not one woman the boys are all in good spirits
and so am I.
