George W. Young to Mary Young, 11 October 1861
Huttonville Va October 11th 1861
Dear Mother I take my pen in hand to answer your letter of the 21st
I am well at present and hope these few lines may find you in good health you said you had not got a letter from me for two weeks and that is curious for I write about 2 a week we have left our camp with the rest of our brigade and are at Huttonville we are all going somewhere and I dont know where but I have an idea we will go to kentucky I am very well satisfied with Va I made a dollar and a half this morning going out and getting apples and selling them to the boys There is more chestnuts and grapes than I ever saw any place I have so I like soldiering firstrate
I wrote to you about the battle at greenbrier and I tell you it was a right sniptious affair it was funny to see the cowards fall out when we got orders to charge We got our money sometime ago and I sent $30.00 home but I dont know whether it got there or not. Some of the boys has got money yet and some of them has none aready I sent nearly all of mine home no more at present
yours Affectionately George Young
