Huttonville Va Oct the 13th 1861
Dear Mother I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well at present and hope these few lines may find you in good health I have just this minute received your letter of the 6th and also one from Rebecca of Sept 29th
I was sorry to hear that the cattle and horses were sick all you can do with is to do the best you can. I am in very good health and spirits and doing well I can save a heap of money if I come through safe. I am cook to day and am glad to say I have plenty to cook and we have had ever since we left Maryland althoug one of them cheese you are making would not go bad to night for supper you said they were fighting in kentucky I say let them pitch in for their might be such a thing as ours Coxes and rosecrantz brigades coming there / yet and then they will be cleaned out certain. Rebecca asked me if I could read your writing and I can read it very well and I can read Linas writing too and I like to read a letter from all of you but I must hurry for we have to go on inspection of arms directly and then I have to cook supper Tell Rachel and Lina they must be good girls and I will bring them somthing from virginia I am glad I volunteered when I did in fact I like soldiering fine but I must close

Dear Sister I take my pen in hand to address you a few lines. I dont write to either one of them you mentioned and I want you to be sure and tell me the reason you do not want me to write to Al for I have not written but about a letter month to him
I write about 3 letters a week home or have for the last month and I cant see how it was that you did not get any for two weeks at a time I want you to write me a letter about 3 yards long and tell about every thing that is going on and some more but I will have to dry up
accordingly write soon and Direct as before. give my love and best respects to all
