George W. Young to Mary Young, 8 November 1861
Huttonville Va Friday evening Nov the 8th 1861

Dear Mother
I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well and hope these and hope these few lines may find you in good health

We have had a very fine dy to day over head but the ground is muddier than ever I saw before

I was at the funeral of one of our men today. his name was John Graham from near Franklin Ind. he was a good honest fellow and first corporal. I was one of the twelve that fired his the farwell salute over his grave. he died with the fever We have not got any mail for over a week on account of the bad roads but I think I will get a hat full of letters day after tomorrow

Many are the rumors that the boys gets up about us going to leave Va Some say we are going to madison Ind Some say we are going to Indianpolis, others Evansville, Ky Mo Tenn N.C. and as many other places as I can name in a month but I know all about where we are going to precisely (the other sheet / We are going to winter in randolph Co Va at most not farther than ten miles from cheat mountain pass

Saturday morning Nov 9th my opinion about staying here has proved this morning to be correct for our captain got an order for timber this morning to build Winter Quarters and now I am certain I am a going stay here it woud help me a great deal if you could send me some blankets mittens socks drawers and a couple of flannel shirts. I have bought me a pair of boots of the sutler to keep my feet dry for if I was to take sick here the dog would be dead I think I will get a furlough this winter to come home but I am not certain It is raining as hard as it can pour down to day But I must quit writing soon for it is nearly dinner time

Give my love to Grandfather and Mother and all the rest of the folks

So no more at present but remain
Your Affectionate son
George W Young
