Camp near Nashville Tenn
Dec 13th 1862
Dear Father and Mother
I take the present opportunity to address you a few lines in answer to your kind letter of the 7th which I received to day it found me in good health and I hope when these few lines reaches you they may find you all well we are still camped about 3 miles from town and the rebs pickets up in about 8 miles of Nashville Our Division was out forageing day before yesterday and got into a skirmish but only got one man killed I have not heard of Dick Cornine since we first missed him I thought at first that maybe he started home. When we marched to Colombia Ky Dick fell out 6 miles from camp with several other boys. the boys left Dick and an other fellow 3 miles from camp coming on but they never got up that night and 2 days after that we saw a wagon master that said he saw a dead soldier the day before shot through the breast and I suppose him and Taylor was both killed Taylor was the mans name that was wa was with Cornine. I wrote a letter to John Canada at Caanan but I dont know whether he ever got it or not if Dick was not killed and ever comes back I am afraid he would fare hard. I have just this moment got a letter from John Kenidy he appears to think that Dick was lost in the perryville fight but it is a mistake for the regt was not near perryville
it is nearly christmas and I would like to be at home about that time but I will have to put it off untill next year and then I think it will be uncertain as I think the war will last about 3 / years yet and I think the sooner discharged is played out.
we will be payed off again in a month I owe up a good deal for clothing and dont expect I will get much but what I do get I allow to send the most of it home and take better care of it than I have been in the habit of heretofore for I am out of money and tobacco and I have got so used to tobacco it is hard to do without it but I will get used to it I reckon
Tell uncle George and Milt to write me a letter and evry body else that wants to
I must Close for this time
writ as often as you can
