Dear Father and Mother
I take the present opportunity to answer your letter of the 21st Dec which I received yesterday it found me in good health and I hope these few lines may find you all in good health. I received 3 letters yesterday one from uncle George and aunt Liss I got a letter stating about uncle George and Jot and uncle Milts farm trade when I was at Nashville before the battle I got the money you sent me yesterday and bought 10 postage stamps and the rest in tobacco so I am all right now we were mustered for 4 months pay at Cave City Ky New years day I understand we have to settle our clothing bill up to that date. I wrote you a few lines when we was at Nashville a few days ago and the next day we marched to Murfreesboro and as soon as we got there I went to see the 37th they were badly cut up Capt Mc kee was severely wounded 1st Lieut of Co K was killed Lieut Holman killed. Lem Jackson Jim Beebe Seargent Grossman Silas Hall and several others in D. and A. that I have forgotten was killed W. H. H. the 15th Ind lost 234 killed and wounded
the 44th Ind run like white hearts but were rallied and fought like devils
the 81th Ind got into hand to hand fight and I believe they lost nearly all their officers

the old Division got to fight all they wanted to but we were assigned to annother Division away up in ky but I guess we will be sent to the front now and very likely we will / get enough to do yet. We are in the 12th Division commanded by Reynolds and the 40th brigade composed of the 17th 72nd 75th Ind and 98th Illinois commanded by Col. Wilder the 33th brigade is in our Division but I forget the regt. that are in it and our other brigade was taken prisioner at Hartsville

We drew some of the best gum blankets the other day I ever saw which you know is a very good thing in a family of soldiers we had a right smart of promotion in our Co. yesterday Capt Jones was promoted to Major Lieut Bill A. Owens to Capt Orderly James N. Wagoner to 2ond Lieut.

Well I guess I will have to quit for this this time I believe I will go over and see the 82th this evening

I am looking for a letter from Rebecca and Lina and Rachel write often. Rebecca and
