George W. Young to Amaziah Young and Mary Young, 26 January 1863
Murfreesboro Tennessee Jan 26th 1863
Dear Father and Mother. I take the present opportunity to inform you that I am well at present and hope these few lines may find you enjoying the same blessing. the latest letter I got from you was dated Dec. 25th I have written two since then.
we have tolerable hard times within the last 3 or 4 days we just returned last night from a three days reconnoiter to the front found the rebs still and dident get to shoot any. took a few straggling prisioners. rained 36 hours while we was out we captured several horses and 30 mounted men from our regt has gone out to day after more part of our regt is being mounted on horses and the rest on mules and that suits me much for I have got auful tired of marching on foot I think we will cut a grand dash get captured or killed when we get our mules for old Wilder will make us get along and keep moveing Wilder is our Colonel since the promotion of Hascall. he is commanding the brigade we are in now. (1st brigade 5th Division Thomases Corps) and he is a regular John Morgan
the weather here is just like april in Ind and sometimes I think about plowing but I think by the time I get out of this I will too lazy to do any thing. I have been away about this 2 year and it dont appear to me like it has been more than six months
I have my health mighty well with exception of the tooth ache and I have got nearly all my teeth pulled out and wont have any to ache after while it was tolerable hard on my feet at first for all the shoes I get is about an inch shorter than my feet but I have got used to it now Jan 27th a snow storm blowed up last night and this is the coldest morning we have had a mail came in last night but I got no letters I cant tell what the reason is I think I will get one to night the old 87th is getting along fine what there is left of them I believe I have nothing more to write this time give my respect to Grandfather and grand Mother and all the folks. Tell uncle Milt I would like to be there to help him feed and interest his clerks these cold winter nights. Write often. Yours Affectionately
Geo. W Young
