George W. Young to Mary Young, 9 April 1863
Murfreesboro Tenn.
April 9th 1863
Dear Mother
I take my pen in hand this morning to answer yours and Rebeccas letters of the 2ond.
I was sorry to hear you was sick but I hope when this reaches you you may be well and enjoying good health and spirits. I just got in last evening from an 8 days scout we had several skirmishes and captured 100 prisoners but you will no doubt see an account of it in the cincinnati papers more minutely than I can write it. I am awful sleepy and tired this morning. I have got a very good horse and like it much better than I did when I was walking. my horse is about the color of old Dick most too conspicuous a mark to stand pickett on I was sorry to hear that Clay buntain and George Furgesson poor Clay was sick a good while at Murfreesboro. I would advise people who have sons and friends in the army not to write discourageing letters them / for I think in many cases there are worse than duble barreled rebel shotguns.
as far as I am concerned I would rather shoot a Copperhead than a cursed half starved reb
I have only got about a year to serve yet and I dont want to come home untill then. I dont want to see any of them young rebs I dont care how soon they break out all over the north and then there will be a revolution in good earnest. Tell Lina and Rachel that the old man that composed the song I sent to them and sung songs for us in camp was a spy and was shot a few days ago I want you all to get along the best you can Tell Father to write me a letter he has not wrote me one for a long time Give my respect to Grandfather and Mother and all the rest of the folks I saw ben Nicholas to day in the 68th Ind
Yours Affectionately George. W. Young
