George W. Young to Mary Young, 2 September 1863
Camp in front of Chattanooga
Sept. 2ond 1863

Dear Mother
I take the present opportunity to inform you I am well and hope these few lines may find you in good health

I have been at the regt 4 days and have been on picket once and had a talk with the rebels across the river our officers says hostilitys will commence tomorrow and if the rebs stands we will have a warm time I think and maybe I will get to go north again but I hope not. I dont think our brigade will be engaged only if the rebs tries to cross the river and I dont think they will attempt that at all

I wrote a letter to father the day I got to the regt but dont know whether he got it or not Lina and Rachel must / write me a letter and be good girls and learn to write and study grammar and not be like the girls in the Tennessee mountains the grown girls dont know their letters and look as wild as indians and hide as quick as they see any body

there was one man of our company that died of his wounds Nichols Deitzer from Shelbyville Ind and I believe every man in the regt that had a bone broken I believe has died I suppose the warm weather was the cause of it

well if I get shot through the other leg at Chattanooga I think they will give me a furlough to come home and there is no telling what will happen for if we are engaged at all we will have to ford the river in front of rifle pits and havey batteries

Tell aunt Liss I have found blue eyed montain lass that says she wants to marry some yankee and I am going to bring her up north with me she is tall enough to pick young squirrels out of the tallest tree in Indiana.

Give my respect to Grand father and Mother and write soon

from your Affectionate Son
Geo W Young
