Sept 16th          1863
 
Dear Mother
                                    I take the present opportunity to inform you I am well at present and hope those few lines will find you in good health our brigade forded the Tennessee river 7 miles above Chatanooga about a week after I got back to the regt and we have a hard time since we have been in Georgia skirmishing every day untill to day and to day is the first chance I have had to write and I dont know when I will get a chance to mail the letter we have not got any news lately all we know is that the rebs is in front of us
 
            my leg is entirely well and does not / hurt me any to ride I have wrote 2 letters home and have not got an answer I have not got a letter since I have been back
 
well I cant write at all to day I dont know whether you can read it or not I expect we will have a fight soon with buckners Corps if he dont run
