George W. Young to Amaziah Young and Mary Young, 25 July 1861
Oakland
Allegany County Maryland
July 25th

Dear parents
I take my pen in hand to drop you a few lines although I you have forgotten to write to me

I am getting as stout as a bear.

we left parkersburgh the 23th and got here the 24th passed through 24 tunnels we are now in Oakland Md but y can take the atlas and tell more about it than I can. I dont know whether we we will get through the gap very soon or not. it appears to me like they keep behind for home guards

there is six hundred rebels ten miles from here the Colonel says we are going to dislodge them and and entrench our selves / and stay there a while I am spoiling for a fight

it is of no use for me to write to you for I expect you hear more than I do.

I have wrote you 15 or 20 letters and if I dont get one soon I shall quit writing

Yours forever
George W Young
