August 29th     Tenn
Camp near Mcminnville

Dear Mother               I have not heard from you for a long time. I ought to have written sooner but we dont get any mail any how. our regt has been on some long scouts lately and hard one too we are now camped on the railroad 2 miles south of McMinnville at the foot of the Cumberland mountains we have crossed them once and had to fall back on account of no water we get an abundance of fruit of all kinds and plenty of melons and sweet potatos We want for nothing / but pork and are continualy on half rations of it

I wish you would write and let me know who has gone into the new service and what Cos and regts they are in. I have not heard from pa for a long time and dont know where to write to him I will tell you what I think about the war I think it will be over in one year if it ever is. Mother I ought to have sent some money home from Shilo field but I dident but I intend to send / home the next I draw this is the 29th of aug and there is four months due me the first of Sept but I cant tell when we will get it for half of the regt has threatened to desert when they was payed off I expect it is the worst regt in the service

Mother I dont expect you can read this poor writing for I have almost forgot how to write. this leaves me in good health and I hope it may find you all well write soon

from your Affectionate Son
