Dear Harvey
I have been on the watch for a letter from you sometime. But as you are at home enjoying yourself with the fair damsels of Clarendon no doubt you have forgotten that you have such a friend as your humble servant
While flying around which I know you are doing you must recollect that you are a soldier & give thought occasionally to those who are in the field or rather in the mud at this time. we have had a greatdeal of rain & such road you never saw as we have it does not appear to stop military movements we have had one fight & are looking for another every day it appears to be the general impression that the next attack will be by water & land there is a considerable fleet collecting in the Hampton Roads & report this morning are that about thirty iron clads are coming up the James River if it be true no doubt we will have music in a few days such as will chill the heart of man
I am very anxious to see you to tell you of some of my narrow escapes since we last parted. The Negroes came very near getting about one hundred of the [?] among the crowd I have not heard a word from Breach yet I begin to fear that he was kiled I will advirtise him in a few days & see if we can get any information of his death or his whereabouts we have heard from several that was taken about the same time that he was. The is no news stirring in the Company Burgess Blowden joined us yesterday evening he exchanged with Gamble I think we can effect an exchange for Moutner Bagnal. The boys are well as far as I know I am not doing duty with the Company now I am acting ordinance officer for the Brigade have a pretty easy time but goodeal to do you must excuse a short letter & write soon let me know if you have heard anything from that affair we last talk of. I seen her only a few minuts when I pass through Columbia Nothing was said on the subject. Remember me kindly to your Mother & all of the family. Tell Cousin V. I often think of camp meeting—Hoping that this may find you and the family well I remain
Yours truly Willia. V.Witherspoon
