Camp Henry McCullock May 2
Dear Sister
As it has been some time since I have written to you I think it is nigh time I was at it. David came up this morning and so it will be a good chance to send a letter back by him. I was very agreeably surprised the other morning by seeing Brother Eck. I think he looks a considerble older. He spent that day with us, and started the next morning for Aransas to see Major Yager. I reckon it will be several days before he comes back as it is a long ride down there. I hope he will get the appointment of surgeon in this battallion, as I would like very much to have him along. I do not know when we will get off or where we will go. Ed received a letter the other day from Cousin Henry in which he says that orders have been issued for us to go to Aransas, but we have not yet received them that I know off. Ed thinks our going there is only for the purpose of getting the battallion to gather / preparatory to ordering us off I hope it so for I am heartily tired of laying here doing nothing, and reading about the sufferings and trials of others, while I am laying here doing nothing. I wish I could have been with Winchester at the battle of Shilo. I hope he is unhurt I rather think he is for I saw a list of the killed and wounded of Moore's regiment and he was not down.
We had some very bad news yesterday I hope it is not so, but if it is we will have hard times yet. The news was that five gunboats had passed fort Jackson and were opposite New Orleans. The infantry are now being paid off I believe we receive nothing owing to the contrayryness of Col Garland.
You spoke of having two shirts. I am not particular what you make of them as I will kneed some shirts and drawers both before long. Well Good Bye Dear Sister
Give my love to all. From your ever affectionate
Brother W. H. Beaumont
