            Dea Shelton
Yours of Oct. 31st came to hand day before yesterday. I had been to Col. Chambliss Camp to get his signature to the wood requisition & also an order to furnish wood & lumber for the troops while on D[?] hill. I never recd any invoice of the wood or lumber. My requisition was for twelve cords wood & Capt. Branch only furnished me one & a half cords or three perhaps. I dont remember how much plank was furnished. that you can assertain from Capt. Branch. I'l have to make out a certificate that the wood & lumber was furnished which will be used as a voucher.

I have just herd from Jim Pace who was just from home that Mother had had a great deal of sickness & that a man had died but he could not tell me the particulars. However that night your letter came enforming me of the death of Daniel. I was very much surprised to hear it knowing he was a boy of a very strong constitution but the strongest can die as well as the weakest. I expect Mother will make herself sick attending the sick, now that Miss Peggy cant assist her. This is the greatest affliction the family has had since the war commenced.

I saw John Cox quite often while we were at Winchester but have not seen him since we came here. John was quite well and looking fat. Sharp & Buckweat are quite well, they have been driving the Gens wagons since he has been with us. Capt. Rose is still under arrest, the boys generally are looking well. I saw Col Chambliss yesterday he and his command were quite well. They are now without tents they having / been sent to Gordonsville a few days ago expecting the army to fall back. We have been under marching orders all this week but now I think the prospect to remain here some time is very good. I sent Doug to Richmond Monday after shoes for the boys & he got 34 pr only. I understand however that several thousand pr have been sent up in the past few days by government.

I wrote to Mother last monday that I came very near being captured by the Yankees last thursday, that very cold sunny day but I avoided them by hand whiping & fast running. Their ammunition was not very good that day either. Doug has sent Longstreet (the Sorrel) to bro. Robert. I want the old pay rolls for the Capts to make out their rolls by & a copy of the list of shoes each Capt got & to whom they were given & price. The latter you can send but the former I'l have to send for, perhaps go after twould be pleasant. If you can send those things by Cousin A. Simmons do so. Give my love to all. I'm well as usual & the little family also.

Yours truly
A. L. Land
