Albert Lewis Land was born around 1828 in Sussex County, Virginia, to Nathaniel and Mary Land. His father probably died before 1850. His mother was a farmer who owned $4,000 of real estate and $26,000 of personal property by 1860. Land grew up and attended school in Sussex County, and by 1860, he was working as a farmer, and he owned $7,000 of personal property. He supported the Democratic Party, and he supported John C. Breckinridge in the election of 1860.
In August 1861, he received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in Company A of the 41st Virginia Infantry. The regiment took part in the Seven Days Battles, the Second Battle of Manassas, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, the siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox campaign. He was promoted to captain in 1862, and he served as an assistant quartermaster.
He married Mary L. Urquhart on February 19, 1863. He lived in Cobham, Virginia, after the war, and he worked as a farmer. By 1870, he owned $4,000 of real estate and $500 of personal property. He died in Surry County, Virginia, on May 16, 1873.
