Presley Hawkins was born on March 24, 1812, in present-day West Virginia. He married Susan Lathum on April 3, 1840, and they had at least seven children: Elizabeth, born around 1841; John, born around 1843; Perina, born around 1845; David, born around 1848; Wesley, born around 1850; Henry, born around 1852; and Isaac, born around 1854. They lived in Taylor County, Virginia (present-day West Virginia), and he worked as a farmer. By 1850, he owned $1,100 of personal property. They moved to Pleasants County, Virginia (present-day West Virginia), and by 1860, he owned $2,000 of real estate and $344 of personal property. His wife died on January 5, 1884, and he died in Pleasants County on August 17, 1889.
