Camp Gregg Va may 10th 1863
Dear mother it is threw the mercies of God that I am spard this oppertunity writing to you to let you no that I am well with the excepting of cold I have a very bad cold from lying out in the rain and the fetugue of the march we have a pretty hard time for the last 10 days we have had a very hard fight here but we drove the yankes back acrost the river and all is quite here now but I cant say how long it will bee so but I hope this war will soon come to an end so we can get to go home and stay thare the rest of our days in pease with god and man I recieved your kind letter yesterday and was glad to hear that you and famly was well hoping when these few lines comes to hand they may find you all well I can not say that J H is well for I have not saw him in some time I went home on furlough and when I / got back to the regt ment they was a lying in aline of battle and James was not well so they sent him to the horspital and I have not here from him yet he was not very bad off when he left the Co well mother I wish you could git to see your little grand daughter one time you would bee oblige to spank her alittle I think she is so sweet you could not help it she is hard to beet I tell you and I hope the is not far distant whe this war will close and then I hope if it is gods will we will bee permitted to see each other again I want to see you all very bad it has bin along time sinc I saw you sely and pap and the baby was well when I was at home you must write to me as often as you can and let me no how you are agitting along so I must close by saying farwell for this time write soon
