Bolton Miss July 4th 1863
 
Dear Father & Mother
                                    I take the present opportunity of droping you a few lines to let you know that I am well greatley hoping these lines may com safe to your hand and find you all well I have nothing much to write to you at present
 
we left Jackson the first day of this inst we are now in 8 miles of the enemy and is redy to meat them at any time expecting the engagement to comence every hour to day was the day that the yankes said they intended to take Vicksburg but I think they are a little [?] of Gen Jonstson Gen Breckenridge has a beter chance to give his Divission a name than he had while under old Bragg the enemy semes to be quit in our front to day in the plase of maken their raid I think if we can whip them here that they will do somthing towards stoping the war and if this fight dont stop it I dont know what will the yankes is at big Black River and we have got som pontoon bridges with us to cros on when we git thar if they dont cros before we git thar I want you to write to me and let me know you all are giting a long and how all the folks is doing you must excuse me for this is composed and badley writen letter for the flies is so bad that I can hardly write for them but however I remain yours truly untel death            Thomas H.
