Charles G. Sawtelle to Francis J. Parker, 1 June 1863
Thirty Seventh Congress
Senate Chamber
Washington City June 1st 1863.

My dear Parker
I believe I am in your debt about a letter & a half and I am ashamed that I have not answered either. I wish you had been with us on our ride across the Rappahannock. twas a hard trip but we had a good deal of fun. the chief drawback to our enjoyment of the affair was that a fellow got most infernally sleepy, and a McClellan saddle on a hard-trotting horse isn't the most charming place for repose. I've slept up pretty well since our return however, and am well rested now. If the Infantry had done their work as well as we did what was cut out for us the effect / of the late advance upon this "Inholy" might have been very different.

Hooker hasn't altogether covered himself with glory. He tried to find a victim in Meade—failing in that in Uncle John Sedgwick but in doing this waked up such a hornets nest that he was compelled to discontinue that scheme. Stoneman, on account of his successes I suppose, has fallen into displeasure with fighting Joe and will I presume be relieved from the A. of P. If he is Pleasanton will command the Cavly Corps and as I have no fancy for serving with this warrior I shall probably go to some depot—Aquia Creek perhaps—

I am up here in Washington for a day or two. Don't fancy from the heading of this letter that I am frequenting low or disreputable places. It happens to be some paper left by Nesmith at Ingalls rooms where I am writing /

As soon as I get back to camp I will write you a long letter and give you all the military news which I dare to write. Please hand the enclosed note to Kitty whom I envy very much the pleasure of being with you in Boston for a time.

Love to Anna & the Children

Regardfully
Charlie
