George L. Barnes to Francis J. Parker, 23 September 1863
Boston Sept 23rd
Mr. Parker
Dr. Sir
I have applied for a commission in the 59th (Veteran) Reg't. and sent in testimonials from some of the Officers of our Reg't. that were at home on furloughs. Will you grant me one. not a flattering one but an honest recommendation according to my merits as an Officer while in the 32nd. I think you will acknowledge that I labored hard and did my / duty while in the service, and I hope you will grant me what I ask. Please reply as soon as possible and direct to 922 Blackstone St.
Yours Truly
Geo. L. Barnes
