John Hinsch to Francis J. Parker, 4 November 1863
Camp 32d Mass. near Warrenton Jutn. Va.
November 4th 1863.

Col. Francis J. Parker
Colonel.
I take the liberty to address you on a little matter which may be of some importance to me. I have, since an Officer in the 32d Regiment at times, when in conversation with other Officers, been told that my promotion in the Regiment was owing entirely to their exertions. knowing that I am only indebted to you for it, I scorn all such insinuations, but they come to often, and I wish you would write me about it, that I could satisfy my mind about it.

This morning the Official notice from the State House, of my promotion as 1st Lieut arrived. I went to work to make out my Rolls for an early muster. I had again to hear about it. an Officer / said to me "If it was not for me you would be a private in Co D. today". now I believe I have done my duty in any capacity in the Regiment to the best of my ability, and such language sometimes in presents of other persons, dont show much respect.

Lt. Col Stephenson arrived with the Regiment on the evening of the 2d inst. he is well, only a little honorably disfigured. The Regiment is in good health and spirits, we have a very good set of conscripts, they will not be dishonor to the old 32d. I wisht I could say as much about the general discipline of the Regiment!

My promotion will seperate me from Lt. Warren, we got well used to one other, that it makes rather sad parting. I think we both will cry soldiers tears over a piece hard bread at it.

With my best wishes for your health and welfare

I remain
Respectfully your Obedt Servant
John Hinsch
Lt. 32d Mass.
