James S. Bond to Francis J. Parker, 4 January 1864
Haverhill Jan 4 64
Respected friend. When I last saw you I was made happy by your kindness. you then stated to me not to suffer but to apply to you. I now make that application, but Dear Sir I do it with a feeling of delicacy knowing how kind you have been to me. but Sir I would not be obliged to do so if Govt would pay me my just dues why they are so dilitory I cannot tell. it is now going on two years since I made my application & the money does not come. they sent me word that my papers were all right & why in the Name of God do they not pay me & thousands of others our just dues. it has / always been said that Republicans were ungratefull & I for one begin to feel the full force of it. I have got all my papers right for my pension but it does not seem to come they now owe me over seven months & I begin to find that hope deferred maketh my heart sick. please to excuse me for coming to you in my trouble, for you have proved a friend to me both in the field & at home, if you can find it in your heart to help me a little, I will try & repay it if Govt ever unlooses its Purse Strings. A little now will help me A great deal Please answer at once & believe me I remain your / Obdt Servant
