Fort Stanton DC June 24th 1864
Col
My Dear Sir
Yours of the 21st came to hand on the 23d inst & contents noticed which I thank you for
If not incompatible with your duties I would be greatful to you to make a statement so far as your knowledge extends in regard to the matter which I can send in with my explanation You are knowing that it was impossible for me to transport Arms & Equipments that fell into my hands by reason of death, discharged, sent to the hospitals, on detached service promoted & transferred. You are also better posted in regard to Q M Hoyt not being able to procure vouchers & the reasons why he did not give them when said arms were turned in than myself for he was appointed with you on the staff. I do not think the government lost more than one gun out of the 49 & that was in consequence of / one man being missing in action at Fredericksburg whom was taken prisoner. I think a statement how the Regiment was placed in regard to Ordnance & Ordnance Stores, & the [?] in that campaign before that department was organized from you would have give me strong influence with the department with my troubles. It takes sometime to learn all that is required to be performed when we commence without any instruction or explanations from the department only what we could gather from the Regulations
It is too true Col that myself & family have to mourn the loss of a son & brother whom fell on the battlefield at Resaca Ga on the 12th ult. whose bones are left on the soil of the enemy (as Gen Sherman issued an order that no one should be removed until the 1st of October) to bleach. He fell nobly defending the rights & maintenance of freedom, but the Nation mourns his loss as one of the many units who have died shouting the battle cry of freedom He was shortly to be Capt. but our Heavenly Father has called him home & his work / is finished—a great loss
I remain sincerely
Yours
C C Bumpus
