Boston Septemb 10th 1864.
Captain.
Yours of the 1st I received yesterday. I have no acquaintance with Col Hoffman & no influence on him but I should be wanting in frankness not to say that so long as my old comrades are treated as they have been, and are, by your military authorities, I have too much self respect to ask any favor for the prisoners in our hands. For my own [faded] I could not ask it.
I trust you will appreciate as without intention of offence my plain reply to your request & am
