Edward O. Shepard to Francis J. Parker, 14 June 1865
Hd. Qrs. 1st Div. 5th A.C.
June 14 1865

Col. F. J. Parker
            Dear Colonel,
I am about to take a liberty with you for which my excuse is that I do it in a strictly confidential way.

The 32d Regt. is to have a new flag the flag, on which will be inscribed the list of battles (twenty four) the regt. is entitled to by published orders from Hd. Qrs. A. of P.

I remember that you once desired to present the regt with a set of colors, but was prevented by a circumstance which we all regret, but will speak lightly of now its author / is no more. You may know that every other officer and every man in the regiment would have felt proud to receive the flag from you. Knowing this fact, knowing too that your regard for the 32d remains undiminished and being able to assure you that we, who remain, of your old Command, delight in remembering you, I can take the liberty of suggesting to you the present opportunity, without seeming to beg.

Please to bear in mind that I do this entirely of myself "unofficially" and privately. So that you can act your own pleasure in the matter with perfect ease. I merely and in the most friendly manner inform you of the opportunity.

Pending your reply, I will try to postpone the decision regard- / ing the flag for a few days without assigning my reason.

Please address me at Hd. Qrs. 1st Div. where I am serving as Div. Inspector.

            With kind regards I remain,

Very truly,
Your friend
E. O. Shepard
