January,          Sunday, 1,       1865.
Cold and windy. I had the tooth ache very bad all day. I drawed rations. went on inspection. I wrote to Wife. A queer Newyers to me. I took cold cod fish and cold coffee for breakfast,
 
Monday, 2.
Clear and windy. I drew rations, and went on inspection. I drilled the Company. I had a very bad tooth ache all day and night.
All quiet in our front. But heavey firing on our right.
 
Tuesday, 3.
Clear and pleasant. I drew rations and went up to the Sutlers. I wrote to L. H. Weed. I had the tooth ache very bad all day. All quiet in our front but some shelling up on our left.

Clear and pleasant. I drew rations. I wrote to Almira. I had a very bad tooth ache, all day. We had very poor rations. no mail at night. All quiet in our front.
 
Thursday, 5.
Clear and warm. I drew rations. I wrote two letters. I had a tooth pulled and it like to broke my jaw. it bled very bad all day and night.
All quiet in our front.
 
Friday, 6.
Rained very hard. I wrote to my wife, and to Brother George, and recd one from each. my face was swelled very bad. I did not feel very well. very hard Picket firing in front.

Cloudy and rainey. I drew a good many rations and fixed our shantee. I wrote my wife a letter. Heavey firing on Picket all day. Several men was wounded.
 
Sunday, 8.
Clear and pleasant. we had inspection and we looked tip top. I wrote two letters home. Heavey firing on Picket and very muddy. I felt tip top all day.
 
Monday, 9.
Clear and warm. I drew rations. We had inspection. We all looked well. I drilled in the manual of arms. All very quiet on Picket. But some very hard shelling.

Rained very hard all day and washed our tents full of mud. I went to the Sutlers. All quiet in our front. I felt tip top, at night I slept in the mud and water.
 
Wednesday, 11.
Cloudy and windy. I drew rations and help fix our shantee. I was very tired at night. I recd a letter from Wife and one from Brother Joseph. All quiet in front.
 
Thursday, 12.
Clear and pleasant. I wrote to my wife. A flag of truce on the line. our Boys and the Rebs talked with each other and appeared very friendly. I felt tip top all day.

Clear and warm as May. I drew rations and acted Orderley of the Company. All very quiet in front, no firing at all. I felt bully good, But I was very tired at night.
 
Saturday 14.
Clear and pleasant. I was judge for our Company. A target firing. I got my box from home and the Boys, and myself had a tip top good time. All quiet in front.
 
Sunday 15.
Clear and pleasant. I drew rations and went on Brigade review and I recd a letter from Wife. I had a big old time eating and talking. All quiet in front I felt tip top.

Clear and pleasant. I went on inspection. we all looked tip top. I wrote several letters. All very quiet in our front. I felt bully good, eating with the Boys out of my box.

Clear and pleasant. I drew rations. our Company had Target firing. I was best in the Company. We gave three cheers for the capture of Fort Fisher. All quiet in front.
 
Wednesday, 18.
Clear and pleasant. We had inspection. I wrote to my wife and one to my dear Parents. All quiet in front. Seventeen Rebs come into our lines. I felt bully good all day.

Clear and pleasant. I drew rations. our Company had Target Firing. I was best in the Company. All quiet in front. I felt bully good all day. I lived very fat.
 
Friday, 20.
Clear and pleasant. We had inspection. I recd two letters from home. I wrote two home. All quiet in front. I felt tip top. I eat dinner with Lieut. Strickland.
 
Saturday 21.
Rained all day. I drew rations. I felt bully good all day. All quiet in front. T. Parks and myself stayed in the Captains Tent at night for him. we had a tip top good time.

Cloudy and misty. I laid around the tent all day. I recd three from home. I wrote most all day. All quiet in front. I felt bully good all day.
 
Monday 23.
Rained all day. I drew rations. All quiet in front. I felt tip top. A hard fight at night with GunBoats on the James River. We could hear it very plain.
 
Tuesday 24.
Clear and pleasant. we had Target firing. I was judge. But I beat the Company at shooting. Heavey shelling over us all day. I took my rings off. they hurt my finger so I had to take them off.

Clear and pleasant. I drew rations and Lieut Strickland and myself went out on the Picket line and talked with the Johnies. they was very friendly to us. All very quiet in our front.
 
Thursday, 26.
Clear and cold. Lieut and myself went up to the Appomatox River and was close up to Petersburg. At night I rode our Majors horse over to Meades Station. All quiet in front.
 
Friday, 27.
Clear and cold. I drew rations and laid around camp all day. I wrote two letters and recd three from my wife. I felt tip top all day. All very quiet in our front.

Clear and cold. T. Parks and myself went to the Sutlers. We had a tip top good time. We had a good oyster supper. I felt bully good all day. I wrote to my wife. All very quiet in front.

Clear and cold. I drew rations. We had inspection. Rodes, Parks & myself went to the Sutlers. A flag of truce on the line. Stephens, Hunter Hatch, Campbell. Wanted to pass our lines. But did not.
 
Monday, 30.
Clear and pleasant. We had inspection. three flags of truce on the line. great excitement. I recd two letters and answered them. George came at three oclock P.M. all quiet in our front.

Clear and pleasant. I drew rations and George and myself went over to the Hospital to see Jack. we saw the Peace Commissioners, Stephens, Hunter Hatch, Campbell. Great cheering when they passed.

Clear and pleasant. We had to fall out to the breast works. at five oclock we had inspection. We got orders to move. George and myself had a good time with Lieut. Strickland at night.
 
Thursday, 2.
Clear and pleasant. I drew rations. I wrote to my wife. We had orders to move. We had inspection and the Captain inspected the Company. he had just got back from home. All quiet in front.

Clear and pleasant. we had inspection. we look bully. I drilled my squad. I went after a barrel up to the Commisary. I felt very well all day. all quiet in our front.

Clear and pleasant. I drew rations and the Company went on Battallion drill. I wrote to my wife and to L. H. Weed. A flag of truce. Heavey shelling over us about all day.
 
Sunday, 5.
Clear and pleasant. I drew six days rations. I worked very hard all day. we got orders to move and packed up. We was a going up on our left. we sent out no picket. I had a bad headache all day.

Clear and pleasant. I recd a letter from my wife and answered it. I had a bad headache. We are still under marching orders. Heavey fighting on our left. We sent out no Picket.

Clear and cold. I drew one days rations, and I recd a letter from home and answered it and wrote my wife a letter. We are under marching orders. All quiet in front I felt very well.

Clear and cold. I drew rations and I wrote to my wife, and Brother Joseph and Wm Kerr. I felt tip top all day. all very quiet in our front.

Clear and pleasant. I wrote two letters. no mail to day. we all felt bully good all day. The Rebs shelled our Regiment very bad. no one hurt. no news to day. George expects his furlough.

Clear and the coldest day we have had. we all carried wood all day and got stuff out for a bunk and prepared for inspection. I was very tired at night.

Clear and cold. I fixed up big for inspection. we all looked tip top. I drew rations. Heavey shelling over us. I recd a letter from Mary Parks.

Clear and pleasant. I drew rations. I recd a letter from wife. I wrote her one. I went on Battallion drill. the Rebs shelled us very bad. one man killed in G Company.

Cloudy and rainey. I recd a letter from wife. Our Company was excused from duty. Parks and myself fixed my bunk. We went to the Sutlers had a good time. Some shelling over us.

Monday, 20.
Clear and pleasant. I drew rations and over to Brigade Commisary to see Dutton. Heavey shelling over us. I recd a letter from wife. I had a bad cold. We heard Charleston was evacuated & Columbia ours.

Clear and pleasant. I wrote several letters. We had inspection and went on Brigade Parade. At night I went to see Dutton. All quiet in front. I had a very bad cold. We gave three cheers for Sherman taking Charleston

Clear and pleasant. I drew rations. I wrote home. We had Brigade Drill. I was very tired at night. I did not feel well all day. All quiet in front. We recd marching orders at 12 o'clock P.M.
 
Thursday, 23.
Warm and rainey. I drew rations at 5 o'clock A.M. We are under marching orders. I saw 13 deserters. Parks and myself went up to Sutlers. I recd two letters from home. I heard Jo enlisted. I had a very bad cold.

Cloudy and warm. I drew rations and wrote to Mother and Almira. Parks and myself went to Sutlers. had a good time. I saw 14 deserters. I had a bad cold. Some shelling our Co. We gave a shotted salute at 4 P.M.
 
Saturday 25.
Cold and rainey. I drew rations. I wrote to my Wife I had a very bad cold and was quite sick. Heavey shelling on our Regiment. Heavey cannonading up on the river about eleven oclock P.M.
 
Sunday, 26.
Cloudy and rainey. I drew rations. I wrote to Johny. Lieut Strickland went home on a leave. I was very near sick. I signed the pay roll and at 9 oclock P.M. we recd our pay. very heavey Picket firing all night. Several struck around our tents

Cloudy and warm. Parks & myself went to the Sutlers. had a good time. I was sick all day. I recd two letters, one from George, one from Johny. All quiet in front. the Reg went on drill at 3 oclock P.M.

Cloudy and Rainey all day. Parks drew rations for me. I was very near sick. We mustered for pay. All quiet in our front. I wrote to my wife and sent her $4.00 dollars. I eat a very little through the day.

Cloudy and unpleasant. I was sick all day. All quiet in front. 5 deserters come in. I recd a letter from George & my wife. Tom & myself went up to Coopers and eat some apples.

Cloudy and rainey. I drew rations. I felt quite well all day. Rodes and myself beat the bully of the company at pitching quoits. All quiet in our front. I felt quite lonesome all day. I recd no letters.

Clear and pleasant. Went on Company Drill in the forenoon and inspection. We was shelled very hard along our lines. Parks & myself went to Sutlers. I recd a letter from wife and from Nan. Heavey picket firing. we was ordered in line of Battle at 8 o'clock P.M.

Clear and pleasant. we had company inspection at 9 A.M. I drew rations. We fell into line of Battle at 1 oclock P.M. we felt bully good. I wrote Nan a letter. also cousin Mary Parks. no mail. I went to Brig. Head Quarters for Lieut. Nichols.

Clear and pleasant in morning We got ready for Brigade inspection. Col. Harriman said we was best company in Brigade. I drew beef. I wrote to Dear Parents. Some shelling, and heavy Picket firing. Rained in the afternoon.

Clear and pleasant. first very windy. I drew beef. Some shelling in the afternoon. A flag of truce put up at 4 P.M. I and the Captain pitched quoits and beat the bully. I felt tip top all day.

Clear and pleasant. we had Company inspection. I wrote to wife and Brother Isaac. I drew rations. I had a boil in my neck. we was shelled at night. I stood out and watched them shell. Lt. Strickland returned.
 
Sunday, 19.
Clear and pleasant. We had Regimental inspection. We looked bully good. the Rebs throwed shells at us. Church at 5 oclock P.M. I did not go. I wrote to Parents. I had my hair cut. A beautiful day. Cap. & Strick. come into our tent at night. had fun.

Clear and pleasant. We had Company Inspection. we looked tip top. A splendid day it was. I drew rations and we got shelled very bad, the worst we ever was. But we dried them up. A shell struck close to me.

Clear and pleasant up to 10 A. M. afternoon rainey. company inspection in the morning. all quiet in front. I recd two letters from wife dated 12th & 14th. I was glad to hear from her. Cap come a visiting. we had a school at night. I retired at 9 P.M. high wind and raining hard.
 
Wednesday, 22.
Clear and windy. We had Company inspection and drill in the forenoon. I drew rations and wrote wife a letter. We had drill about one hour. George returned at 8 P.M. We had a gay old time. I got a present from my wife and a pair of new boots.

Clear and the windiest day I ever saw. We had company inspection and drill in the forenoon. I wrote to wife. all quiet in front. My boots hurt my feet. I felt proud over my present and the knife Ike gave me.
 
Friday, 24.
Clear and windy. We had company inspection and squad drill and company Drill. I had a very lame neck. I drew rations. all quiet in front. I got Lt. Stricklands photograph. Wind blew very hard all day.
 
Saturday, 25.
Cloudy and windy. The rebs charged our line on the right of our Division took Fort Stedman. took 300 prisoners. we took 2000 prisoners and killed a great many and retook our works. battle lasted 5 hours we fell into line and stacked arms. my neck was lame I recd a letter from mother and from J.

Clear and windy all day. I had a lame neck was excused from duty I drew rations and I wrote to Mother & Joseph. Tom and myself took a walk. all quiet in front. I recd a letter from wife. all well but very lonesome.

Clear and pleasant. A beautiful day. I was excused. I had a lame neck. I wrote wife a letter sent Lt Stricklands photograph. Heavey shelling all day. Sheridans Cavalry passed along. I recd a letter from wife. all well but Cit. with cold. The boil broke on my neck.
 
Tuesday, 28.
Clear and pleasant. all quiet on our front. I drew rations. I felt bully good. My birth-Day. this forenoon heavey shelling at one P.M. we recd marching orders. an attack was made on the Second Division at 8 P.M. we fell out and stacked arms and ready. But firing somewhat less at 9 P.M. very dark.

Clear and pleasant. I drew soft bread. Some shelling at 2 P.M. We fell into line. Stacked arms at 4 P.M. Stayed so until dark. at 10 P.M. heavey firing commenced. We fell in line and remained so until dark. they shelled us very bad. one man wounded in C Co. Rained very hard.
 
Thursday, 30.
Rained very hard. I drew rations and wrote to wife. Some shelling at Fort Hill. Heavey cannonading us on the left all day. I recd a letter from wife and one from Parents at 5 oclock P.M. T. Parks sick all day. Cleared off in the evening. all quiet at 7 P.M. I retired at 9 P.M. all quiet

Cloudy and rainey all day. I wrote to Parents. Some shelling. Cleared off at night. I drew beef. we expected to charge on the Rebs. we fell out at 11 P.M. in line of Battle, went bed at 12 midnight. we had to lay under arms. I could not rest nor sleep.

Cloudy and cool. I choped some wood. Ell was quite sick all day. Cit come down and stayed with her. Jim Bailey took supper with us we had a good time. But it rained some at night

Cloudy and cool. I choped wood and corded all of it up. I was very tired at night. George and myself went up to L. H. Weeds after our pigs. Mother come to Georges.
