Thomas Jefferson Hinton
Thomas Jefferson Hinton was born on March 28, 1842, in Illinois to Thomas and Rebecca Hinton. His father was a farmer who owned $1,000 of real estate and $300 of personal property by 1860. The family lived in Le Roy, Illinois, until the 1850s, when they moved to Orange, Wisconsin. By 1860, Hinton was working as a farmer. He married Ellen Ramsey around 1864, and their daughter Caroline was born around 1867.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on March 28, 1864, and he mustered in as a corporal in Company B of the 38th Wisconsin Infantry. The regiment took part in the siege of Petersburg. He was severely wounded in the right arm on April 2, 1865, and surgeons amputated the arm soon afterward. He mustered out on May 18, 1865.
 
He settled in Mauston, Wisconsin, after the war. He applied for a federal pension in May 1865 and eventually secured one. By 1870, he was serving as a register of deeds, and he owned $1,200 of real estate and $500 of personal property. He eventually moved to New Lisbon, Wisconsin. He died of heart disease in New Lisbon on May 8, 1903.
