George Hinton was born around 1831 in Ohio to Thomas and Rebecca Hinton. His father was a farmer who owned $1,000 of real estate and $300 of personal property by 1860. The family eventually moved to Le Roy, Illinois. By 1860, he was working as a farm laborer in Fountain, Wisconsin, and he owned $200 of real estate and $200 of personal property. He married a woman named Cynthia around 1860, and they had at least six children: William, born around 1862; Frank, born around 1865; Jessie, born around 1867; Guy, born around 1876; and Howard, born around 1871; and Georgia, born around 1880.
He enlisted in the Union army on March 31, 1864, and he mustered in as a sergeant in Company B of the 38th Wisconsin Infantry. The regiment took part in the siege of Petersburg. He was severely wounded in the right arm on April 2, 1865, and surgeons amputated the arm soon afterward. He mustered out on May 20, 1865.
He settled in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, after the war. He applied for a federal pension in May 1865 and eventually secured one. He received an appointment as a local postmaster, and by 1870, he owned $3,000 of real estate and $200 of personal property. He employed at least one white servant. He died in Juneau County, Wisconsin, on May 2, 1914.
