Gertrude Mercer McCurdy (maiden name: Lee) was born on January 7, 1810, in New Jersey. She married Robert H. McCurdy on January 17, 1826, and they had at least four children: Theodore, born around 1829; Richard, born around 1835; Sarah, born around 1842; and Augusta, born around 1845. They lived in New York City, and her husband worked as a merchant. By 1860, they owned $20,000 of real estate.
