Camp Near Washington Apr 25th/65
Friend Martha.
It is just 9 oclock and as I have plenty of time I will write a few lines to you you must excuse me for not writeing before but we have been moveing most of the time. we are encamped about 5 miles from Washington near fort Stevens. I do not have any thing to do but to go on guard once in a while has your school commenced yet who is going to teach this summer how are all your folks is ben at work at Elys yet tell him to write. I shall have to write a very short letter this time for it is time to go to bed but I will try and write more next time. they say they are going to send us home very soon on 60 days ferlough on half pay but I cannot tell much about it. if I do come home I am going to have a party and ask the president. tell Nancy I / will write when I get another leisure hour. is ben commenced to take music lessons yet. I must now draw to a close
Give my respects to all who inquire and accept a share yourself. I am going to send home a box to my folks tomorrow write soon tell all to write
