Charles A. Gaskill was born around 1842 in Waterford, Vermont, to Jacob and Mary Gaskill. His father was a shoemaker who owned $400 of personal property. He grew up and attended school in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and by 1860, he was working as a farm laborer.

He enlisted in the Union army on March 7, 1865, and he mustered in as a private in Company D of the 8th Vermont Infantry. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with light hair and blue eyes. He mustered out on June 19, 1865.

He returned to St. Johnsbury after the war, and he married Rebecca A. Kirk on November 21, 1866.
