Samuel Bottomly was born on February 20, 1799, in Fernlea, England, to Thomas and Jane Bottomly. He was baptized on May 19, 1799, in Saddleworth, England. He eventually immigrated to America and settled in Leicester, Massachusetts. He married Hannah Livermore on January 9, 1828, and they had at least four children: Lavina, born on August 25, 1828; Cornelia, born around 1829; Hannah, born around 1833; and Nancy, born on November 19, 1835. His wife probably died in the mid-1830s, and he married Abigail E. Willis on July 15, 1838. They had at least two children: Jerome, born on August 14, 1842; and Martha, born on May 5, 1844. He worked as a wool sorter in Leicester, and by 1850, he owned $2,500 of real estate. By 1870, he owned $4,000 of real estate and $12,000 of personal property. His wife died on January 29, 1873, and he died of “Paralysis of [the] Brain” in Leicester on December 9, 1880.
