William B. Whitney
William B. Whitney was born on December 5, 1842, in Indiana to Henry S. Whitney and Mahala McCoy. His father was a carpenter who owned $1,000 of real estate and $200 of personal property in 1860. Whitney grew up and attended school in Spencer County, Indiana. He enlisted in the Union army on October 9, 1861, and mustered in as a corporal in Company C of the 42nd Indiana Infantry later that day. The regiment took part in the Battles of Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge. He was promoted to sergeant on January 1, 1864, and he died on June 1, 1865.
