Lewis V. Tucker to Deborah O. Tucker, 30 July 1863
Marine Hospital July 30th 1863

            Dear Wife
I will write a few lines again to you as I am not very busy just now and to let you how I am at present

I am still at the Marine Hospital as you will see by the heading of this letter but cannot yet tell how long I shall stay here but shall probably until after I get my pay which will be now in a few days as the Regiment has been paid and some of the hospitals to day the Paymaster was expected here but he has not come yet If they do not pay of here by Monday I shall go the the Paymasters office after my pay for I have waited long enough I think. others have had their pay some time ago but the 160th was put off until the last for some cause they were to go into summer quarters at Thibodaux where we were last winter

Aug 6th            I have put off this letter until to day and now I will try and finish it I would have done it yesterday but I got your letter the day before and was so surprised at Bill Cookingham that I went down to the Barracks Hospital yesterday to see about it the way of it was I got ten dollars of Josephas (the last that I sent you) and he was to wait until I was paid before he wanted me to pay it back but he wrote to Bill about it and told Bill to turn it on the note that I had against him I had been telling him how Bill had served you about paying that note which was the reason of his writing to him about it. So I do not have to pay him the money back but I sent it to you have you got it yet I mean what I sent you You may endorse ten dollars on the note and then make him pay the rest as soon as you are a mind to Rube Hartman saw him sign the note when he gave it to me he was down to John Haight brick yard at the time

Yesterday I went to the Paymasters Office and got my pay they did not give me any allotment check this time but paid me all money and I shall send you $10. a week until I send all to you but just a little I shall put $10. in this letter and hope that you will get it safe. I hope you will not have to suffer so much after this for money

James Vaughn is coming home before long and what money I have then I will send by him Zenas S Roberts is dead and also Clinton Spoor. W. S. Drake is trying to get a furlough so that he can come home

The Lieut Colonel was here last Saturday and ordered me to go to the Regiment but the Doctor says I must stay here so I did not go Beny Vaughn is sick and in the St James Hospital here in the city Al Cain is very sick so is Deavenport & Bill Vangorden they are at the hospital in Baton Rouge

I will again in time for the next mail              I wrote to Mr Heath a short time since and put a letter in that for you

Write often to me

From yours as ever
