Lewis V. Tucker to Deborah O. Tucker, 8 September 1863
On the Dock at Algiers L.A.
Sept 8th 1863
Dear Wife
You will see by the date and place of writing this that I have again mooved and am staying on the rail road dock in Algier just across the river from New Orleans we have been here ever since Saturday Our regiment left here last Friday on board of a steamer but for what place we do not know but think they have gone to Texas and we are waiting for transportation to follow them they have no doctor with them as one of our doctors is at the Marine Hospital and another has gone home and the third is here with us waiting to go after the regiment
I got your letter yesterday that you wrote the 21st of Aug I was glad to get an other letter from home before we had to leave here and I am glad that you think that your health is improving So is mine keep up your courage for I think this expedition will wind up the war in this section of Dixie for the rebs are just on their last legs here and if Charlestown has fallen their case is desperate and hopeless and they must give up soon or starve. But I must close this I will write again at the first opportunity and as often as I can
You must write often to me even though you do not have much to write at a time tell me in your next letter if they have commenced the college again
No more at this time
But Remain as Ever
L. V. Tucker
(PS) we have no captain yet
Wm Van Dusen is acting as captain
