Lewis V. Tucker to Deborah O. Tucker, 31 January 1864
Marine Hospital New Orleans La Jan 31st/64

Dear Wife I will write you a few lines again to night although I have but little for to write at present I was expecting to visit the city cemetry this afternoon but could not go for the reason that about the time that I was going I had 9 new patients come in and the writing necessary and taking care of them kept me busy until after dark, so I had to postpone the going for to day. So you see I cannot tell you anything about that and I do not know as it would be very interesting to you if I do write about what I should see there. and then another thing that kept me in was because I had to take an inventory of all of the clothes in the ward because it was the last day of the month and we have to give an account of all the clothing in the ward on the first day of every month

The weather to day has been very warm so much so that it has been uncomfortable even with my coat off. the grass begins to look green like spring

There has been to mail steamers arrived here the past week but no letters for me by either of them but I hope the next one will bring some for I am getting hungry for a letter from home again

There is no use of saying anything more about pay day for it will not be here until the first of March no for one month is past and they will probably wait and pay both payments at once. they think I presume that soldiers families can live on promises but I do not believe it yet

I send you a paper and lilly a book with this letter But I can not think of any more to write to night so I will stop and write gain this week
Write often

yours as ever   L. V. Tucker
