Lewis V. Tucker to Deborah O. Tucker, 29 February 1864
Marine Hospital N Orleans L'a Feby 29th /64
Dear Wife
I will try again to right and write you a short letter as there is another mail steamer goes North thursday. My health is quite good now in comparison to what it has been and I hope that it may remain as good at least as it is now although I feel pretty tired to night for to day I have had to inventory all of the clothing of the ward beside taking care of the sick and we have quite a number of pretty sick men in the ward now so that it keeps me pretty busy nearly all day and to day has been mustering day and I had to see to the mustering of all of my men that was not able to go out for them selves
to morrow we have to sign the pay roll and I hope when I write again that I shall be able to send you some money I think that we shall get paid about Saturday or Monday but whether we shall get two or four months pay I cannot tell but I hope four months for it is our due
I sent you & Mr Reynolds that box last week. I paid the freight on it and sent you one dollar besides you will probably get it before you do this if it goes through all safe and right, which I hope it will
I came pretty near getting a discharge to day. The Inspecting officer came round taking the names of those that he thought ought to go home and when he came to me he gave my arm a squeeze and passed on without saying anything
did not I come pretty near getting one
But I feel so tired and sleepy to night that I shall stop and try and write you a better one and more of it next time
Write often as you can
From yours &c
L. V. Tucker
