Lewis V. Tucker to Deborah O. Tucker, 14 March 1864
Marine Hospital New Orleans L'a March 14th 1864

Dear Wife
It is with a sad heart that attempt again to write you a few lines, for to day I received from you two letters one with Feb the 24th & the other March the 1st in the last you speak of being sick and also say that lilly is very sick with Diptheria. The shock that hit me has made me so nervous that it is difficult to write for with that disease even with the most skilfull physician is a hard disease to over come, but do not spare any pains with her and we will trust that she will get over it. How I wish that I was there with you while you are both sick so that I could take care of you and help you along in your troubles

I shall try to come and see you if I cannot get but a short time even. To morrow I shall apply for a furlough but I have my doubts about getting one but I certainly shall not if I do not try. But dont you calculate on my coming unless I write to you that I am for the chances seem to be rather against my getting a furlough there has been so many that has gone home on furlough from here this winter but if I can get Dr Benedict in my favor I shall be pretty sure of one for he is one of the board and also acting as surgeon in charge now while the surgeon is sick. Dr Benedict is the Dr that has charge of Ward A. and seems willing to accomodate all that he can. but how I shall succeed with him I cannot say but will tell you when I write again. So do the best that you can and we will hope for the best I shall not try to answer much of your letters to night but probably will write again to morrow night the reason of

I do not know as there will be any mail steamer leave here for the North until Saturday but I will mail this in the morning so that the first one will take it that goes from here north

You said that there was a man there that wanted to buy the house & lot well sell it to him if you can. If you want to sell it do so but I would not I were you sell for less than six hundred and fifty dollars and as much more as you can get you know that we were to pay $750. for it but what ever you get for it will be all right so far as I am concerned for I do not think that you will do what you know is wrong with it

I got a letter to day from Eliza they were all well when she wrote she was talking of coming to see you when she wrote my letter

but I will close for this time and think that I will write again tomorrow night

           Take good care of Lilly
