Dear Wife
Perhaps that you will think I have nothing else to do but write judging from the number of letters that I am writing to you now, one last night and another to day and probably another before the week is out. But since I got yours yesterday it seems as if I want to fly right home and see you. But as I cannot the only thing that I can do is to write and I want to do that all of the time for it is the only way that I can talk with you yet and that is a very slow way, yet it is some consolation if it does take a good while to do it
But I have some news to tell you. I said in my letter that I wrote last night that to day I should apply for a furlough Well I have done so. And as near as I can find out with success. I spoke to Dr Benedict in regard to a furlough (he is Acting Surgeon in charge here now) and gave him my reasons for asking for one and he seemed to be very willing that I should have one and said that he did not doubt in the least but that I would get one at all events he would do all for me that he could. all that he thought there was any doubts of was the approval of Gen Banks and he thought there was not much doubts for I do not know of a furlough that has gone from here but what has been approved by Gen Banks Dr Bockees name goes a good ways on any such paper as a furlough / But yet it is not certain and I may not get it yet for all the prospect is promising Now, do not make any calculations on my coming until you hear from me again, and until you do hear from me perhaps you had better not send any more letters to me. I will write often and let you know how good the prospect is of my getting home But if I do come I want them biscuit for my supper
Dr Benedict seems to be a very nice fine man he believes that a private soldier is just as good as an officer and he is not afraid to sit down and talk with them, but we have some officers here that if they were not obliged to would not look at or speak to a private but he is not one of that kind. His Regiment has reenlisted and gone home on a furlough that is why he is here on duty now
I have not heard from Dr Powers since he went away from here. his wife stays here yet
But I must close this for want of anything to write as I am writing so often that I do not have much to write at a time. I will write again for Saturdays mail and I do not know as this will go before then
Good Night
From Yours as Ever
L. V. Tucker
