Lewis V. Tucker to Deborah O. Tucker, 23 August 1864
General U.S. Marine Hospital N. Orleans L'a. Aug 23d /64

Dear Wife
I will write you a few lines this afternoon in answer to your letters that I recd a day or two since

Last friday I got two letters from home. I had begun to dispair of getting any more when them came but they cheered me up and I felt better after getting them although I was sorry to learn that Lillys health was so poor cheer her up all that you can and I will come home and see her as soon as I can. I should have written to her before this (and sooner to you) but I have not felt able to write often getting through with my work I would be so tired. it seems as if I get tired very easy more so that I ever did before yet I manage to do my work every day and shall as long as I can

It is not very warm weather here now and it rains nearly every day and has for the last four weeks it is not near as warm this summer as it was last nor near as dry

I am sorry that I did get paid last pay day so that I could have send you the money for everything is so dear that I know that you must need it very much but pay day is close at hand again and as soon as I get the money I will send it to you or come and bring it if I can myself at any rate I will do the best that I can

Those mocking birds are not mine and I cannot afford to pay from $5. to $8. for one to bring home. they are a very tender bird to keep and only sing at night and in the morning

I got a letter from Mr White the day before I got yours. he has been sick a bed ever since he got home but is improving slowly

I have not seen nor heard from Jo Rush since I wrote last, and I presume that he has been sent North to join the Regiment if he has not gone he will be up here to see me before long again

After I am paid of I shall send you another box of things Our Regimental hospital things are all left here in this Department and none of our Regiment here but myself and one more I shall go to the store house and pick out such things as I want and send them home for I do not think that they will ever be called for again

but I must stop for it is near mail time the steamer starts for N York to morrow morning

Write as often as you can

Yours truely as ever
L. V. Tucker
