Lewis V. Tucker to Deborah O. Tucker, 22 September 1864
Gen U.S.A Marine Hospital N Orleans L'a Sept 22d /64

            Dear Wife
This morning I will try and write you a short letter in answer to yours of the 4th & 5th that I recd last Monday I was very glad to get the letter as I always am to get letters from you

for the last week the weather has been quite cool here and my health has been improving I feel much better than than I did when I wrote last and if this cool weather continues I think that I shall get along firstrate. We do not have to work so hard now for there is not a great many sick here and the number is growing less every day, and I hope that it will continue until the hospital is emptied of sick

Do not give yourself so much uneasiness about me, Ma, for I shall try and do the best that I can for myself while I am here. of one thing be assured that is that I am coming home again even though I do not until my time is out I never had any doubts but what I should come home again. So keep up as good courage as you can the time is growing shorter every day and eleven months will soon pass by

It done me good to hear you say that your health was so good and also the childrens. how I should like to see you all

Mr Reynolds wrote to me and I answered it right away I will write to him oftener after this. he wrote me a good letter such as shows the kindness of his heart. You can judge from the man what was in the letter. I shall write to him again in a few days

Jo Rush was here when I got your last letter and when I read to him that Bill had enlisted it made him look surprised. Jo health is good. he expects to be sent to the Regiment

You wrote that Jesse Owen wanted to buy the house & lot and would pay $750. for it cash down. I want you to do just as you think best in the matter If you think that it is best to sell it, let it go and do what you think is right in the matter. I would if I were you consult Mr Reynolds about it and see what he has to say about it. I do not believe that he would advise you to do anything but what he thinks is for the best I shall leave it all with you & him and what you think best to do I will agree to

We have not yet got any pay and the prospect grows less every day of our getting any. we have got a regular Bullhead of an Officer here or we should have got sometime ago the money is here and the Paymaster is anxious to pay us but the Officer in command of the company does not know enough to get it for us or else he does not care. If I had that I think that I should come home for a short time but I cannot without it

But I will close for this time and write again soon

Write as often as you can
