Lewis V. Tucker to Deborah O. Tucker, 12 January 1865
Marine U.S.A. Gen Hospital N. Orleans L'a Jan 12th 1865

            Dear Wife
I will write you another short letter to night although I cannot write it yet in answer to any that I have recieved from you for although I have been from home some six weeks yet in all that time I have not heard a word from you in answer to any of the letters that I have written to you and I have sent you four in the time and this makes the fifth one But I hope that before another week goes by that I shall get one from you for it must be that you have written to me before this time. My having to stay in New York so long I did not know but that I should find one here for me when I got here but did not and have yet none since

I hope that you have not been sick so that you could not write I am very anxious to hear from you so that I may know how you are getting along with the cold weather and no money to use but you shall have just as soon as I can get it for you we expected to get paid last Friday but have not yet I hope that we shall get it before long for I want to send it to you for you must need it very much

My health is good I have not been so well in eighteen months as I have for the last five or six weeks. I hope that it may continue The weather is very fine here now just cool enough that we can enjoy it nicely

We are having a Negro wedding here to night on a grand scale. The Doctors waiters or a pair of them have just been married. I did not go in to see them although I might if I had been a mind to but in as much as they were having such a grand time I thought that I would not interfere as I had not got any written invitation mere a verbal one while others got a written one. The doctors daughter wrote them for them and put the names of the person on that was invited It is to close up with a dance probably a regular Negro break down or fuddle

Well I have not got my photographs taken yet so you must tell Laura that she must wait patiently for hers it is coming after a while

I sent four Ledgers to father this week and when they come if the children want to read them tell him to let them have them have you heard anything more from Mr White since I left home. I am going to write to him to night

But if I do I shall have to close this and as I have not much more to write I will stop now I have a lot of bleached muslin that I wish that I could put in this letter and send you. But as soon as I am paid I will send you a box with it in and more with it Write often to

Yours as Ever
